We are looking to add an experienced financial power trader to our US-based team.

The candidate will be responsible for proprietary East Power and Natural Gas trading with a concentration in PJM, MISO and/or Northeast markets.

Responsibilities

• Trade proprietary prompt-to-term financial products, primarily in PJM, MISO, NYISO, and ISO NE.
• Perform analysis and fundamental research related to Eastern Interconnect.
• Work with other members of the desk to share market knowledge and views.
• Work with Origination to price and manage structured deals as required.
• Work in close partnership with control functions such as Compliance, Risk, and Credit to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Degree from a leading university with a concentration in Economics, Business, Engineering, Statistics, or Mathematics.
• 5+ years of trading experience in physical and financial power.
• Experience trading heat rates, locational spreads, and time spreads.
• Option trading experience is desirable.
• Demonstrated knowledge of power and gas fundamentals in the Eastern Interconnect.
• Demonstrated knowledge of market rules and tariffs of RTO/ISOs in the Eastern Interconnect.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Risk Management principles.
• Self-motivated and has the desire to achieve success in a rapidly evolving high-pressure trading environment.

Skills

• Proprietary power trading experience.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills required.
• Programming experience is desirable (Python, VBA, SQL)
• Data Science skills are desirable (Tableau, R, Power BI)

Requirements:

• An undergrad degree in data science/programming and/or meteorology/atmospheric science (or equivalents) with higher degrees considered an asset.
• Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, Git, Linux with Experience with object-oriented programming 
• Experience with data management packages such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn and spatial data management using gridded data such as GRIB, NetCDF and GIS software is considered an asset.
• Energy load and weather forecasting experience outside school considered an asset.
• Wind, Solar and Hydro forecasting experience considered an asset.
• Knowledge of the WRF model is considered an asset.

The successful candidate is someone with very strong quantitative and research skills, who is looking to work in a small, dynamic environment where their efforts are directly tied to commercial decisions and outcomes. The candidate should be extremely adept at communicating information and analyses transparently. They should be comfortable making hypotheses and judgments from incomplete information and learning from that experience.

Your job will be to research and model supply and demand fundamentals and grid congestion in nodal ISO markets. You will work closely with a team of energy trading professionals from diverse backgrounds that include economics, operations research, physics, electrical engineering, and business.

You will build and manage models intended to predict electricity market prices. This will include developing models to produce energy demand forecasts, renewable generation forecasts, utility-scale battery models; and incorporating the results of those models into larger, energy system models. Model inputs will need to be collected, cleaned, and stored. Inputs and outputs will be stored in SQL databases, managed by you.

You will have to be self-sufficient in accessing, managing, and dissecting voluminous data on the power markets and constantly improving and calibrating our modeling efforts.

This position is located in our Calgary office.
